Jim Corbett National Park

Nestled in the foothills of the majestic Himalayas, Jim Corbett National Park is one of India’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. Famous for its rich biodiversity, dense forests, riverine landscapes, and thrilling jungle safaris, Corbett offers an unforgettable encounter with nature.

Established in 1936, Corbett holds the prestigious distinction of being the first National Park of mainland Asia. Initially named Hailey National Park, it was later renamed in honor of Jim Corbett, the legendary hunter-turned-conservationist who played a pivotal role in protecting wildlife in this region.

In 1973, Corbett became a flagship reserve under the Government of India’s Project Tiger, marking a historic chapter in tiger conservation. Today, the reserve spans approximately 1,288 sq. km, covering parts of Nainital, Pauri, and Almora districts of Uttarakhand. The core Corbett National Park covers about 521 sq. km and, together with Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding buffer zones, forms the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve.

Situated between the Shivalik ranges and the Terai plains, Corbett boasts a striking mix of landscapes—sal forests, grasslands, riverbeds, hills, and wetlands. This diverse ecosystem supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Elephant, leopards, deer species, reptiles, and over 550 species of birds. Due to its exceptional birdlife, Corbett has been recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International.
